What types of services are provided by Beaver Publications?

Beaver Publications provides high quality, print-on-demand (POD) services to authors for trade paperbacks. Our books are available in the following sizes: 5x8, 5.5x8.5, 6x9, 7x10 and 8.5x11. Beaver Publications also provides a distribution process for authors to sell to on-line retailers such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, and to bookstores through special order.

Why would an author select print-on-demand publishing?

Simple. Because it saves money over the traditional self-publishing process. Inventory costs are practically non-existent, because books are not printed until they are ordered. Plus you don’t have to search for a distributor. Distribution is easy through our association with Lightning Source and Ingram. On-line sales to retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble are only a mouse click away.

If a customer orders a book, how long does it take the buyer to receive it?

Once the publishing process for an on-demand book has been finalized, books are printed within two business days, and order fulfillment is usually accommodated within 14 days. Order fulfillment depends to a large extent on the delivery system selected during the ordering process.

Does Beaver Publications sell books directly to authors?

Beaver Publications sells directly to authors at a discount of 40% off the retail price, plus shipping, handling and sales tax if applicable.

Does Beaver Publications sell directly to consumers?

Author’s books advertised on the Beaver Publications website are directed to on-line retailers.

What types of manuscripts does Beaver Publications accept?

Generally, edited manuscripts with a final page count of 80 to 740 pages. Manuscripts must be a single-spaced document, in Microsoft Word format, and transmittable to Beaver Publications, as a file over the internet.

Are there any manuscripts that Beaver Publications will not accept?

Hard copy manuscripts cannot be accepted at this time, or foreign manuscripts as we only distribute in the United States.

Also Beaver Publications reserves the right to reject any manuscript for reasons including, but not limited to, poor quality, highly technical subject matter, or manuscripts that are libelous, defamatory, pornographic, or promote hate crimes.

What is the quality of the Beaver Publications product?

Beaver Publications paperbacks are of the highest quality because of whom we have chosen to produce them. For books size 5x8 through 6x9, the interiors consist of 55lb, opaque, cream white colored, acid-free paper stock. For books 7x10 and larger, the interiors are 50 lb offset, white acid-free paper stock. Our standard four-color color covers are printed on white, 80 lb enamel paper that is laminated. Our basic package cover art consists of text block, textured backgrounds, or author supplied art combined with Beaver Publications' backgrounds.

What if I should want a cover prepared by an artist?

For an additional charge of $300, we will have a graphic artist prepare a cover for you based entirely on your input. This cover art will belong to you, should you decide to leave Beaver Publications for any reason.

Can I provide my own cover art?

Yes. Beaver Publications welcomes high quality cover art. Images must be 300DPI and colors converted to CMYK. See our Submission Instructions for further information.

Does Beaver Publications provide editing services?

If a manuscript requires proofreading, we can correct grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. Our price for this service is $.02 per word. For this cost we will proofread your book twice, first, at the time you purchase the service, and again, before the final proof goes to print. Line-by-line editing and content editing are not offered at this time.

What if my document contains mistakes that I didn’t catch, and it’s ready to go to print?

The cost for manuscript revisions is $40.00 to open the file and $1.75 for each correction requested. As these costs can become excessive, we suggest that you have your manuscript edited before you submit it to Beaver Publications.

Who will determine the price of the book?

Beaver Publications will suggest a retail price for the book. It will depend largely on page count and the percentage of the book’s retail price paid to distributors.

Does the author have input on the percentage paid to distributors?

Yes. Beaver Publications will discuss the pros and cons of adjusting the distribution percentage, but under no circumstance will we allow it to dip below 40%.

How will my books be ordered?

Based on our distribution network, books can be ordered through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com plus other on-line retailers. Books will also be made available by special order to bricks-and-mortar bookstores.

Will my books be returnable?

Beaver Publications does not offer a return book program.

How much will my royalties be?

Author royalties will total 50% of net proceeds. Net proceeds includes Retail Price minus distribution and production costs. For example if a 620 page book has a retail price of $26.95, a percentage paid to distributors of 55%, and a production cost of $9.00 the net proceeds would total $3.12. ($26.95 x .45 -$9.00) The author royalty would be 50% of this amount, or $1.56.

How soon will I be paid royalties?

Because of the timing of payments from distributors, Beaver Publications will make the initial payment 120 days following the end of the month in which sales are initially reported. Thereafter, monthly payments will follow. In order to receive payments, amounts due to the author must exceed $25.00.

Does the author retain the rights to their book?

Yes. The author retains the rights to their book. When you sign our contract, Beaver Publications is being granted the right to have your book printed and distributed for the purpose of selling it. You are also allowing us to use the cover art and excerpts of interior text for purposes of placing your book on our website and for promotional purposes. Beaver Publications retains ownership of electronic data files, except in the situation of cover art, where the graphics package is purchased as an additional add-on service.

How do I forward payment to Beaver Publications?

Payments for trade paperbacks and any additional services will be made at the time of contract signing, in United States dollars, by check or money order. Beaver Publications will begin the publishing process when your check has cleared. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Beaver Publications, Inc.

Does Beaver Publications produce ebooks?

No. Beaver Publications does not produce books in the ebook format.

Does Beaver Publications produce hardback books?

Beaver Publications does not currently produce hardback books, but hopes to do so in the near future.
